The qualifying examination is given once per year, usually the last week of October or the first week of November. Physicians who have registered for the examination through the ABEM schedule a one-day appointment to take the examination at one of over 200 computer-based testing centers. The ABEM examination is divided into two portions, one administered in the morning and the second administered in the afternoon. The morning portion of the examination typically consists of standard single best-answer multiple-choice questions. The afternoon portion of the ABEM examination typically contains pictorial single best-answer multiple-choice questions, in addition to standard single best-answer multiple-choice questions. To complete this portion each candidate will receive two books. One book will contain stimulus materials, such as photographs of x-rays, rhythm strips, pictures, etc. The second book will contain the actual questions, and each question will reference a specific stimulus or set of stimuli.
